Netgear wireless adapter does not work WNDA3100v2 Ubuntu 11.04 / linux (ndiswrapper does not work) ~ GNIITHELP

After struggling with myself, I decided to contribute to the greatness that is the Internet, since I have seen many people having the same problem and the different solutions available online, that all The world does not seem to understand.

The key to the installation is that you need to let Windows create the necessary files and then make them compatible with Linux, which is done using ndiswrapper.

  1. Get your systems. And inf. (Done under Windows)
    • As most noobs like me, Linux come from Windows I assume you have installed the card on a Windows system. Go to your Program Files directory (under windows) and locate the NETGEAR folder. Locate the Windows 2000 or XP folder and copy all the files inside.
    • If you do not have access to a Windows system to extract the driver files, there is a way to do it directly in Ubuntu by using "Wine". Since this requires more processing on the Ubuntu system and since what is written for beginners I will not discuss this.
  2. Obtain Package Files ndiswrapper
    • These files can be found here. You need all three of them.
  3. Place the files on your Ubuntu system
    • After getting the files place them in a folder on your Ubuntu system. Note that the driver files must remain permanently their chosen a place that you do not later remove.
  4. Installing packages ndiswrapper
    • Open your terminal window. There are several ways to do this. The easiest way is by pressing Ctrl + Alt + T. For more ways to look here.
    • Navigate to your directory where you found the files using ndiswrapper 'cd' command.
    • Run the following linux commands:
      Sudo dpkg -i ndiswrapper-common
      Sudo dpkg -i ndiswrapper-utils-1.9
      Sudo dpkg -i ndisgtk
Be sure to do so in that order. If you get errors check the
Names used after the '-i' command, since you may have given your files a
Other name or the download server did.
  5. Installing drivers on Ubuntu
    • Go to your system settings (upper right corner) and search for Windows wireless drivers. This can also be done by Applications -> System -> Windows Wireless Drivers.
    • Enter your password, then use the menu to navigate to the file. Inf (step 1) that you have stored on Ubuntu to install the driver.
  6. Verification of installation
    • Go to your terminal again and type: sudo lshw-C network. Next to your Ethernet interface, you should now see something like this:
    • -Network
             description: Wireless interface
             physical id: 1
             logical name: wlan0
  7. Configuring your wireless network
    • Access your network manager by clicking on one of the icons in the upper right corner. Here you can now select the desired network and configure. You can use the same data that you used in Windows.
I hope this quest ends with everyone for the WNDA3100 (v2) under Ubuntu Adapter Solution.
